Sallie Wallie was hit by a car in a small town in Arkansas and lying in a ditch. Someone took her photo and posted it on FaceBook on one of the area rescue sties. She had been dropped off at the town dump with another dog. The other dog was dead and she couldn’t walk. The only rescue group in the area had not responded. When they did respond, they said they could pick her up but only to euthanize her the next day. They had no space.
Hours later, she was still in the ditch. There was an offer to transport her to St. Louis and we then coordinated with Dan Brown to pick her up. He arranged with the local rescue to get her out of the ditch. Dan drove early the next morning to pick her up from them and return to St. Louis in time to get her to the emergency clinic on a Saturday. Many hours, x-rays and dollars later, VSS released her the following day after taking pressure off her lungs for her to breath normally. She was still unable to walk.
Two weeks later, with most of her cuts, sores and bruising healed, she is a typical 8 to 9 month old Labrador mix puppy with bursts of sustained energy and into everything. She is learning that the crate is a safe place where she needs to go while we are gone. In other words, she is darling and totally normal and healthy. She needed that emergency care and then time and supportive care to recover from her trauma. This is what we do. We mend the ones who fall through the cracks, who might be expensive, and yet, deserve a chance.
Sallie is working on house manners and will be ready for adoption after she is spayed.
